Default What causes backfiring thru the carb?

I'm not at the end of my rope yet, but getting close! What causes backfiring thru the carb? Point gap wrong, mis-adjusted valves, intake leak, or just the general lack of ability of the doofus, lame, all thumbs mechanic (that being me). One again, thanks for your patience and input~

Intake valve leak (check with compression gage). dwell off which affects timing(carefully set points and check dwell to be sure they are correct) adjust timing correctly. (hope your cams are somewere near stock so timing will be stock) Make sure carb does not flood setting for 10-15 minutes with motor off and petcock open. Read plugs for how close mixture is. Be sure advance is correct and working. Sparkplug wires are good (check resistance and check wet in dark for bleed) Remember it will run correct if its set correct.?HA

The first thing I would suspect is the ignition timing, and I would look for a 'too far advanced' setting.
Do the ignition timing correctly using a timing light and see if that does not make the backfiring stop.
