When i kick it blows out the carb and wants to catapult me over the handlebars. '74 fxe kick only, was told it was bored out, dont know to what, s&s super E carb, 2" drag pipes. first harley owned/worked on. just replaced stator, voltage regulator, ignition coil, plugs, wires, battery, ignition (had what looked like 78-79 elec. ignition, replaced with stock point breaker) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
used manual for setting retarded timing with circuit tester. with motor on compression stroke get timing mark(retarded) in view hole. rotated plate till they just open. i had to rotate so far clockwise its just about touching the plate screw.
reads like your off a gear, nice guy who offred his help and phone number.
you shouldn't have to rotate that far, thats why I suggest your off a gear. good luck. heres some pics of some slab shovels

to check the timing marks, pull your pushrods and tappet blocks, then the nose cone, make sure the pinion , cam and breather gear are all lined up on the marks,,
Tell me how you timed the new point system or call me at 608 847 4240
I'd follow this advice above , what parts you put into the ignition ? harley or aftermarket ? Cam lobes on a lot of the cheap advance units in conversion kits can be way off sometimes and the points that come with them are junk . Point gap ? and does it stay about the same when you rotate to the big lobe . I've had them read .018 and then jump to .060+ or be almost closed with the cheap parts they vary so much makes timing a b*tch something to look at maybe .
Definitely sounds like timing. Make sure you are on the compression stroke on the front cylinder. The fact it's spitting and trying to throw you makes me believe it is way too far advanced. You could dial it back some until you at least get it to start, time it by ear, then fine tune it once it's running half way descent.
The man, who elaborated on after market doodoo was correcto mundo. Lots of new parts are made in china, and man they are way, way off the mark.
I agree with all the advice you have been given, your timing is way off, recheck every thing.
One more thing, check your push rods, make sure they are the correct ones, being as your at that stage already..
good luck hombre..
