Default '79 FLH 80 Cube Stator info

Hey Folks,

I am getting ready to upgrade the charging system on my '79 and I'm looking for some advise/guidance. The stock system is supposedly a 17.8 amp system. I would love to get a bit more out of it as I want to have some additional lighting and such on it.

I have looked at an Accel stator and it's the same rating as stock. But the '81 to '88 is a 22 amp stator and I dont know if there are any size restraints from the '79 case to the '81? Have any of you out there tried to get a bit more out of the charging system? I haven't tore it down yet as I would like to have all the parts on hand before so I can just swap it all out, I am also installing a new voltage regulator. I'd love to hear what some of you have done to your pre 1981 FLH's.

Thanks in advance

I know you can get even 32 amp kits. They all fit the same, just the windings are bigger in each coil and you need to go with a Regulator for that size Stator. I still run stock in my 78 but if your going to run a lot of lights then yeah you should go up.

Dude get the late model 32 amp set up , you can get the stator & reg to match for under $150 on Ebay and just use your rotor you don't need the " matching one " everyone tries to sell as a kit it will fit & work just fine been running them in multiple shovels for yrs .

Biggest bennies are if something does go any shop probably has areplacement on the shelf and the case / plug setup is way better . But I would suggest a sealed or glass matte battery upgrade at the same time , wet types WILL NEED TO CHECKED VERY REGULAR LIKE WEEKLY >
