If it still has the stock headlamp and harness, the connectors inside can get loose. Eventhough the plastic plugs are snapped tight, the metal male/female terminals get loose to each other and get intermitant. I chased mine for years.

Also there were no real 78-1/2 FX or FXS's they just added the ectronic ign towards the end of the production year because it came standard on the new 80" (FLH) that came out in mid year. Service Manuals say "78-1/2" but that was for the FLH's in the same book.

I don't mean to be disagreeable or question your knowledge, but that is not what the owner's manual for my '78 1/2 FXE said on the cover and as I recall, my factory service manual also did not have any FLH's in it.
It really is not a big deal...........only for the purpose of points or electronic ignition, that's all that I was pointing out.

I have a real 1978 1/2 FXE SITTING IN MY GARAGE, it has electronic ignition on it, I bought it new in late 1978 and I'am the original owner.

Check all the basics ... But ... It sounds like an ignition module if it's a late 78.
