Default shovelhead starter Jack shaft

I just put on a Rivera inner primmary on my 1984 FXWG and had to change to chain drive. The starter gear reduction housing has to be changed. Is my old jackshft and gears going to fit in this new housing? they seem to be compatable throughout those years. Everything else in the primmary is stock.

'had to change to a chain drive'...meaning it was a belt primary? Stock from the factory would have been a chain primary for your model.

What was wrong with your inner primary?

I went to Primo-Rivera and they listed the inner primary as being a stock replacement for 70-84 models. There was no picture to refer to however. Thinking that since they are stating this then the housing uses the early style starter shaft assembly and drive gear housing (that is the housing NOT used for FXB/FXSB/FXDG, 1982 FLHC, 1983-1984 FLH models and 1984 FXWG models).

If the above makes sense, then the answer to your question is NO the pinion shaft and components are not interchangeable as a group.

I don't know about the jack-shaft...but the belt drive mainshaft in the trans is longer...don't think it will work with a chain drive primary without jury rigging. There is a belt drive Harley NOS cover on Ebay that the guy has had on there forever...might get it and save yourself a lot of grief.

Thanks for the input guys. It does have a stock chain drive primary. The old inner primary was a mess with most treads worn out. I put in a rivera clutch last year and with some engine work I wanted a stronger inner. It looks as though the inner primary will work with the main shaft I have in there now. I changed to andrews gears with a Jims mainshaft awhile ago.
I will keep you up on how this all come out
