Shifting Problem
Having a problem with my 1983 FLHT 5 speed. When you start out everything's great but the hotter the bike gets, the harder it is to shift. Sometimes it won't go from 1st to 2nd starting off. When you are in neutral shifting into 1st it will jump and sometimes stall. I have adjusted the clutch at the lever and the actual clutch itself and have not had any improvement. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can't remember if thats still the old style 4sp clutch or the new skinny plate style in that one , really need to know to give you an educated guess . Could be the throwout bearing or the push rod going bad . Also sounds like the plates are gunked up and need cleaning and good look for damage .
I know this may sound dumb and simplistic, but are you running 90 wt in the tranny? If so, switch it to regular engine oil. The early 5speeds run engine oil, 30wt or 20w50. Same in the primary. The 90wt gums everything up, causes the plates to stick together and the gears in the tranny don't like it.. Adjust the clutch per factory manual specs. It probably will require you to pull the outer primary off and clean it all out, plates and basket included.
One other thing. Replace the clutch cable. sounds as if it might be stretching out as it gets warmer.
