starting problem

Ok,I hit the starter button and I hear a click,ocassionaly it catches and starts,so today I crossed the solenoid terminals and all it does is spin ,doesnt crank motor,,any ideas?

Bendix gear or the fork that pulls it in . Primary cover is coming off sorry .

Is that just the outer? or inner and outer? I think I need to replace the stator anyways so,theres my next big project
