My 1980 Shovel gets a little hot sometimes(.in town when traffic is slow and such )I thought about going synthetic but read here about making my bike leak. What else can I do to make it run cooler?
Those have a habit of breaking the wavey washer so heads up if your running them .
OP , check your timing , backing off a couple degree's can help with this crappy gas we have today and either a outside oil filter or a cooler will help . Add oil capacity will help cool it a bit more . Aside from the checks been mentioned in another post not much else you can do for a shovel on a hot day sorry . Synthetic will give you leaks on the old shovels stick with 60 wt in the summers 50 when colder out .
It may have been a fluke but I tried running regular in my 83 an it ran hotter than it did when I ran 93. I had just gotten it an wasn't sure what to run. I ran only 93 after that.
I know that the motor seems hot on the outside. That's what it is designed to do. Worry about what's happening inside of the motor. What is your oil temp? Running down the highway it should be around 190. In traffic it can go up to 240. This morning if you plan to take a ride, clean or replace your plugs, then forget about them till after your ride. When you get home, take a look at them. Are they chocolate or white. Chocolate is good, white is bad, bump your main one up. This will cool it down a little
As others said, Premiun gas, (I prefer Chevron 93) 50W oil(I prefer Mobil 20w50) will help it run cooler.
Actually, the shovel in good running form runs cooler than my twin cam.
Your motor will talk to you, just listen to what she's saying.

No kidding about that !! Man I was shocked at the temp these new toys run average .
When I am riding normally it runs fine.On a cooler day 60 degrees or so it will actually be at about 160 degrees which seems a little cool.Maybe my gauge is wrong. When I am in town it seems to knock when it starts to get hot.I rode it in a Christmas parade last December. It started knocking real bad. Then I let it cool down and started it and it was fine.No more parades for us.LOL
Gauge will lie like a arab at a garage sale they are always off 20 degrees or more . You really want to know those infrared heat guns are cheap anymore and you do rolling pocket checks , I use them for a lot diagnostic work on the bikes .
