In the pic you can see where oil was leaking from the underside of the primary cover. The motor was dirty but ran really well, no smoke and great smooth idle. The vins matched up.
The leak that is in the picture looks like it is from the inner primary where the shifter rod passes through it. The bushing is a brass bushing that will wear and make the seal where the shaft enter the inner primary leak.

Ask me how I know this? I had an 1982 FXR.
Since you've owned one, would you consider this and the clutch symptoms a deal breaker?

I would not consider the clutch a deal breaker.
On mine, when the clutch was hard, I found that the cable was binding. The clutch is one of the older "Dry" clutch baskets. I changed the plates to the dry/wet plates and a new cable. Problem solved.
A larger problem was that with all of the early 5 speed transmissions (1979-86), there was a weak point in the clutch rod assembly. The clutch release fingers (37084-79) failed several times. I carried the release finger, the bearing (37312-75) and two thrust washers (37313-80). Beginning with the 1987 model year the clutch was disengages using the ramp in the side cover. This fixed the weak release finger.
Both are small problems that can be taken into Account.
