Default Newb w/ a cable question

Hey Ya'll,

I recently traded a VW railbuggy for my first Harley, a '78 FLH that has been outfitted with more than a few goodies. Only thing wrong with it, besides a thick layer of dust is that the PO broke the clutch cable. Simple fix right?

Nope.

It seems that ya can't use a stock(ish) clutch cable http://www.jpcycles.com/product/620-141 w/ a Revtech http://www.jpcycles.com/product/620-129 5into4 tranny.

I have spent quite some time digging for the correct answer to this question. I came accross the installation instructions for the tranny http://www.jpcycles.com/instructions/pdf/620-129.pdf which indicates that ya are supposed to use a cable for a '86 FXST apparently with "clutch cable extension" (CCI#93610).

Problem is that Custom Chrome's web site draws a blank when this part number is entered into their search box. I have no idea what this part even looks like or where to find one.

Now I'm pretty sure I can't be the only person that has come accross this problem, but try as i might, I can't find a thread containing this info, here or anywhere else.

Since most folks like pics

I checked at Iron Eagle (www.ironeagle.com) and it said it had been added to the catalog very recently. He listed it at $10.01 and there were three in stock. No picture of it though.

Been on the phone with their tech line twice. First time was given a part number for a shorter cable for a '86 FXST as the stock one is 62" and the stock FLH cable is 49". He gave me a part number for a (Soft tail) 52" cable which is what I think I need, being that the 49"er appears tobe long enough, just a little short on the "free length". He made no mention of the "cable extension".

Second call netted me advice to call Custom Chrome, and he gave me a bad phone number to reach them. Conversation concluded with me giving him advice to correct a problem he is having on his wife's VW trike.

Now the plot thickens yet again.

Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who, at a party last night, came accross an old shovel with the same tranny (Revtech 5into4). He talked to the owner who, as luck would have it, just replaced the clutch cable. He said that he used a stock FLH cable.

My buddy said that, upon closer inspection, the release arm on that bike is in a "more forward location" than the release arm on my bike.

So, I guess the next question is could Revtech have "re-designed" the release arm on newer trannies, thus making the "clutch cable extension" un-needed? And, if that is the case, is this new arm available?

In looking at this diagram http://customchromecatalog.com/2012/full.asp?page=544

it looks like I need part#93502 or #93620 or both.

Who woulda thunk replacing a damn able woulda turned into this?

Tell me about it. And to think, I thought that having the 5-speed was a GOOD thing.

Was joking with the Woman that the Wrenching Gods must be pissed. Just about as soon as I got the buggy exactly how I wanted it, with ALL the bugs worked out, I traded the stinking thing away.

I can't believe that no one else has had this problem.

I replaced my switches and controls on my 79 fxs with 96 and up controls which means the clutch cable would not work.(levers take different style cable ) so I bought one for a late 90's or 2000 fx and had homer's cycles in toledo solder a new ball on the cable where it attaches to the tranny lever.the owners name is jim and is very knowledgable in shovelheads..their number is 419-726-8645
