buy yourself a sifton #116 its a sloid lift cam made for solids and will not have that tic-tic. its only a 400 lift easy on your valves and guides but lots of power.. just make sure you have someone check the cam gear alignment.

116 Intake: 30/55 265 0.400 Exhaust: 54/26 260 0.400 Overlap: 56

By "tappet wheel" I assume you mean the roller follower on the tappet.

Or just put the stock hydraulic stuff back in it and enjoy the bike.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, guess I have some stuff to think about.

Rick, I thought about going back stock, but I'm an old hot rodder and I know myself. I'd be happy with that for awhile and then start wanting to get more HP. :-) I didn't get any of the stock parts with the bike, so If I'm going to spend the time and money to change, might as well go ahead and upgrade now.

I'll check the tappets this weekend when I adjust the other pushrods.

TwiZted, the bike has an S&S Super E carb and drag pipes. I don't know how the carb is set up, haven't been inside yet. Is that a decent carb? I know they're used a lot on Harley's but I've also heard a lot of guys like Mikunis. I don't like the drags, I've read they're not good for torque and I'm too old to need or live with the volume. I actually like the look of the stock staggered duals with the crossover. If I found a set of used ones, would they bee good, or too restrictive? The only aftermarkets I've found for an 82 FXR are a few sets of Paughcos, like these:

Are they good pipes for the low to mid range cams? Or anyone have any other suggestions? Is there a good set of slip-ons that I could use with the drags?

Some short baffles in those drags help a bit.

I did put some of the Khrome Werks baffles in them. May have added some back pressure, but it's still drag-pipe loud. Funny, in my younger years I really would've liked that. Now it's just annoying. Is that a sign of getting older, or getting wiser?

The short 4" variety usually works for me but yeah, the noise does wear on you over time. Even the wind gets to me sometimes...the main reason I have gone to full face helmets.

The S&S E is a decent reliable carb easy to tune for the average guy , Mikuni's may make a horse or 2 more at peak tune but it a takes a good hand & somebody who knows those carbs to get it that way .

Pipes wise those are personal favorites for shovels and Cycleshack and makes a similar set , back in early 80's they did the big dyno shoot out with a bunch of brands and configurations for basically stock shovels and that configuration pipe made the best HP and torque curves all through the average riding range & cam combo's . They respond real well with later HP upgrades too with minor jetting changes .

Stock pipes this many years down the road will be heavily rusted up inside and some flow blocked by it , they will run ok but like your hauling a fat passenger with the performance feel .

im 62 yrs old and have open drags with 2001 honda prelude finisher cones . they give the back pressure needed to make drags work proper, and they work REALLY well. i run a leinweber L3S cam that LS means loud as f*uck.. with the finisher cones there NO loss of low end they actually improve the whole RPM range.. super "E" with the wide air cleaner for more flow... solids that are noisy fast ramp cams make a racket..

he might want an andrews cam probably a "J" or an "A" i cant stand andrews cams they run out of power top end.. they make good manifold vacumme..

like i said i have run and have people running the sifton #116 even with solids its quiet.. more power than the adverage guy needs..
