74" starting problems
Hi folks,
I am running a 74" stock Shovelhead with a S&S super E. Motor is stock with points ignition. I have been kick starting the bike, always started on the first or second kick. When the bike was cold I choked it and with the ignition off and the throttle full open I would give it three kicks, then with the throttle closed and ignition on it started on the the 1st or second kick. When she was warm she started on the first or second kick without choke. Several weeks ago while checking the plugs I noticed that they were very light, almost white, so I gave the mixture screw a quarter turn to the left to get a richer mixture. The bike ran much better after that, I also noticed she had alot more pull at top end around 65 or 70 mph. The only problem now is that she is starting real hard. I am going through the same procedure as above, but she only fires once if at all but doesn't start. She is backfiring, too. I then have to turn the plugs out (spark is good, gap is 0.028") and give her a few dry kicks and then after putting the plugs back in she starts. She has electric start (not working right now; see another thread) but I would rather kick start. It makes a good and lasting impression on the evo and twin cam drivers. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
