I have just become the owner of a '76 shovelhead which has been mounted on a late model frame.
It has duel discs front and disc rear brakes, fatbob tank, and mag wheels.
I hope I did not screw up!
The owner said the engine was totally rebuilt about 4 years ago and only ridden about 5000 miles since. It starts easy and seems to run well but does have a few oil leaks. It definitely has some electrical issues as the headlight, blinkers, and horn do not work.
I did get a good title with it and a point of origin for the frame.
Do you guys think it would be worth a little more than a stock unit with the newer frame and disc brakes and mags and such? Or would OEM be more desirable?
I know it don't matter now since I paid cash for it, but a little reassurance is always nice.
I too just purchased a 76 FLH Shovel and am also having oil leaks. I knew this before buying it though as according to a lot of people this goes with the territory with them. But it is certainly leaking a lot more than I thought it would.
Also have some electrical issues, but I am looking forward to restoring this beauty.
Good luck with it ...
Thanks Matty,
Same to you.
I understand about the oil, lol.
I was kindof thinking about doing something besides restoring mine. It has already been altered from stock so much it would be like starting over with just the engine.
I am hoping to learn some about the shovelhead engine though.
I am not even really sure what it is yet. I did get it in my name this morning so it is mine now.
The title says it is an Ultima, which I think is just an aftermarket build with an older engine.
Maybe some of the highly knowledgeable folks here can offer some info.
As long as you can work out the paperwork with no issues you should be good to go all shovels are going up in price pretty steady but OEM does bring a bit higher tag for resale .
Oil leaks are an easy fix guys , post up when your ready and I'll give you the low down on what you need parts & gaskets wise & how to's to cure them just take'a a little time and attention to detail that's all . My shovels don't leak period .
Thanks for the response TwiZted.
I want to do a lot to the bike, but I have only gravel to work on for now. I am planning a small shop soon and want to fix everything on the Shovel.
Till then, I am like a sponge.
I found out the hard way this afternoon that the screw that appears to be the idle speed on the right/towards the front of bike is not. I ran it in trying to increase the idle only to find that it would not start due to no accel. pump action. It has an s&s super e on it. I am now in the know about super e's thanks to their website.
I will be looking forward to using your methods to stop the downpour as soon as I have a clean dry place to dissemble it.
I have always had to work on everything I own in the rocks of my driveway. Not fun!
