Easy answer ? Just buy the trans .
or
Sputhe / S&S stuffed with stock five speed guts . but what to do for a kicker ?
Will the stock and or after market kick parts work with the after market case ?
and
I dried up the primary and installed a 1 1/2" Primo .
So I guess I can use any conversion that accepts the tapered shafts , maintains belt alignment , doesn't cause starter gear/plate/clutch/sprocket interference and will accept the kicker conversion for the 80-84 .
Depends on how you plan to use it....if you stick some 5 speed guts in a s & s case...you will have to use a 5 speed kicker...they are not that stout....so if you are planning a kick only high compression chopper..not a good plan. Most of the 5/6 speed in a 4 speed case trans... use a special mainshaft and trapdoor, so they can use a 4 speed kicker...much stronger and plenty of aftermarket parts to make it bulletproof.
What would the point be in doing it ? the final ratio on the 4 and the 5 speed are the same 1-1 you don't get any overdrive till the 6 speed . Be much simpler and cheaper to slap a close ratio gear set in the 4 and go . Do the 5 conversion then you get to dick around with a costly kicker add on and then some pipes don't fit .

3.21 1st gear vs 2.44...allows you to run a smaller rear spocket and still pull off from a stoplight...plus used 5 speeds are generally much cheaper than good 4 speed stuff...if you can find a case for a decent price

With a 3.21 first you'd have to shift in what 15 feet ? There's 3 first sets available for the 4's 3.00 , 2.60 and 2.44 , the 2.44 was in the lighter FX bikes and with a 2.60 in the FL & FLH bikes you had to shift before you got through the intersection . The 3.00 was for side hack bikes and you literally did shift within 15 feet , up side was with a fat passenger on the bike you could tow a car it had so much low end grunt .
I've ran everyone of them . HD went to the 5 after it dropped 20LBS off the flywheels in for the EVO motors and lost about half the lower end torque , shovelheads do not suffer from that issue .
Sprocket wise I always ran a 23 front 47 or 48 rear when I had chain on the rear regardless of which first gear set and all the combo's got long tastes of open highway miles in the midwest and the Colorado mountains after those . I will say the lower first is handy when you get over 8000 ft
Tried the 5 in a 4 case and sold the thing after 6 months , with the crappy and expensive kicker that was next to useless if you actually used it I didn't like the ride or the performance of it at all with a stock shovel engine . I was using second as my first most times, 1st being so low it was annoying as hell . I can see where it would be of some use with a stroker with the shaved flywheels maybe .
What do you all think about the 6 into 4 Baker setup? any first hand experience?
I have had one for 6 years...hands down best mod I ever did to my bike. Bike used to be uncomfortable to go over 65...now I can see out of the mirrors at 80...the shift quality is incomparable to a stock 4 speed...makes the bike a LOT more fun to ride.

Good Luck....
Alternatively, get a shovel RubberGlide..5 speeds throwed in...and able to go to 6 speed Guts, If that is your Bent
