I think the 74" has tall cooling fins on top on the heads and the 80" does not

I know this is an old thread, but I have an opportunity to buy a 79 flh 1200. You say if you got a '79 then it probably IS an 80" motor. Is this right?

The VIN number should say if it's a 1200 or 80"

The first two digits of the VIN will tell you what it was originally:
3G = FLH-80
5H = FLHS-80
7E = FLHS-1200
1A = FL-1200
2A = FLH-1200
