5K is too much and as other people said, as your first shovel I'd look for a later one as unmolested as you can find.

Hey, I just found out that the motor in the bike is not original - it now has a 1976 Super Glide motor. I also found another bike that is closer to home for me, but it is a 1981 FLT Tour Glide. My question is: if I want to strip it down to more of a street bike, is the speedometer built in to the windshield and not on the gas tank? Thanks for your help in my quest for my first Harley.

Definitely walk away from the first one that's going to be a nightmare just in the paperwork alone .

The FLT while a nice dresser does not strip down well there's all kinda ugly under that fairing to deal with if you take it off . Keep looking for a later FX model I think that's going to be what you want from what you say .

exactly... FLTs are fine only for "Road King" type of build, no strip down at all
