Default Noisy Heads

Just picked this bike up and it hadn't been ridden in 4 years. Cleaned tanks,
new starter, coil and cleaned out carb. After riding it the bike was making some noise from the heads. Got home and checked oil. Plenty of return coming into tank but foamy. I want to check the oil pressure going to the heads by removing the overhead oil feed lines. What type of gaskets do they use (regular O rings?) and will these kink when pulled out?
Thanks,
Dave

the oil lines take a barrel type seal top and bottom and accross the covers

the feed fitting on the block that the oil line is going in the hole in it should be no bigger than .150 - if it is the oil voluum falls off and Noize happens < it is like a small hole sprayer on a garden hose the smaller the hole the higher the pressure coming out--

the chrome china crap they sell today has the same .200 hole in all of the fittings and will burn up the top end

John,
I take it the oil lines are copper and should bend out easy enough? I want to make sure the top end is getting oil. Thanks for the heads up on the China crap. I figure I will take line form head and put some plastic hose and route it to a bottle and make sure oil is shooting out.
Thanks,
Dave

another thing that can make them noizy we dont see it too much anymore, as every one seems to know this now - they had sold a kit and it had a wave washer that was to take up the looseness in the rocker shaft instead of shimming them // well it broke and the pieces went into the motor - if you have the push rods out you can stick one up into the rocker ball end and walk it back and forth if it feels real loose than it has to come apart --

post some pictures of what your working with its easyer than guessing what you might have

Default Checked oil pressure

Finally put an oil pressure gauge temperary and changed oil. About 15-20 PSI at startup and 10 PSI while running. Still got the noise. Will pull front exhaust pushrod cover and check for return oil from rockers. I have oil coming back to tank. Will also check pushrods and lifters. Hope I don't have to do the rockers.

maybe a dumb question but what type of noise? as a guy that owns about 8 old ironheads, I'm used to solid lifters and some racket in the top end....does it click, knock, whir, buzz, whine, etc etc???

Just pop the front rocker shaft cover bolt loose with a socket head and impact, start the bike and see if it spews. Front exhaust is the last oiled part of a shovel top, if you have oil there, you likely have it everywhere. If this checks out, I could ask more questions about this noise, as your description is vague, at best.

The noise seems to be coming from the front cylinder and is a knocking sound. Not a lowerend bearing knock. Going to check the oil flow and pushrods and lifters this weekend.
Thanks,
Dave
