Default 72 FLH Project - more ?'s!

So I've started a project. I've asked a couple questions recently and didn't return the favors yet...here are some pics: (and more questions below!)

This is how I picked it up.

After a few rounds of degreaser and the power washer

Don't plan on putting this back on

Pulled the hideous "chopper" style off. Is it worth selling? Planning to upgrade to the front end to modern E-Glide forks/brakes/wheel.
A new set of rear shocks is in order...Can anyone provide some recommendations? Leaning toward progressive at the moment.
Ordered a bunch of new parts...the hardest thing to redo on this bike will be the electrical...looks like the po did a rewire with all red wire!
I tried jumping the starter to turn the motor...only the starter turned. Maybe the bendix? or Solenoid?

Will update this every once in a while... hopefully weekly. Wife is due in July with our 2nd kid. (why I needed a 2nd Harley, right?). Not sure if I'll get out to the garage much after that.

The front end appears to be the original 72 with 6 inch oversize tubes and a smaller wheel. You could pick up a set of stock tubes and return it to original with little work. Anything you take off could be sold. Stock parts are always valuable.

Thanks for the info FilthyLucre

The tubes are certainly oversized! I did pull the forks apart to find a couple spacers inserted to avoid buying longer springs.

Since it is original, I will keep it but will likely not remain on the bike. I plan to rude it and I'd like some better brakes for a piece of mind. I am going to swap in a newer front end, minus the tripple tree.

it gets better as you get older - that is a good bike to bring back to OEM original as all the parts are still available and actually cheap - if you collect up all oem stuff and score on a original paint set by the time the second is 10 it will be a 30,000 dollar piece as an original paint / restored to a used driver level -- you can still get the stuff to do that --

I will certainly go as original as possible. I will keep the fork lowers and brake, but since it's a rider I do plan to use the modern forks and brakes up front. I've ridden my uncles 71 superglide and the brakes are bad to say the least!

It appears to be rattlecan on there now and there is red underneath. Whats the best color to do if I decide to paint it?

I like black but I have am not sure I can afford a paint job in black that is up to par for my pickyness. It shows all the imperfections!

I am thinking a darker blue
..what did the factory offer in 72?

Does anyone know a god place to pick up a front end from a modern touring bike? Someone mentioned they used newer forks in their original trees...I want to bring the new forks/brakes/wheel to this bike...need a line on one.

Found one locally on CL but was sold when I called.

Thanks!

lower legs from a dresser 84 / 99 evo with twin calipers and 11 1/2 inch rotors are all over flea bay

2 cam lowers are as well on flea bay with 4 piston calipers and early lowers have a 3/4 axle like you have

Thought I'd update th thread to keep me motivated. Picked up a bunch of parts locally. Got a set of brembo brakes off a 2010 SG...with wheel/rotors/braided lines/master cylinder/ fork lowers.

I am going to upgrade my 01 glide to the brembo's and swap out my brakes/wheel onto the 72. I ordered a new set of fork tubes and parts to complete the front end.

Not sure what fender/bars to use on this FLH...any ideas? I like the street glide variety with no bolts/lighta but might look out of place on a 72.

Hoping to get her on the road by the end of the month. For once I'm in my budget too!
