I only recently modified a windshield. To measure it up and mark it out for cutting I taped pieces of paper on it. I was cutting it to take some mounting holes, so wanted my marking out to be precise and a bit of string wasn't going to achieve that! So mark out your curve onto paper, then tape that to your windshield.
That yellowed out bit doesn't work for me! By coincidence I have a yellow Firebolt and think the blacked out windshield looks just great, but then I can't look through it anyways. It gives the bike improved shape IMHO, while also keeping me comfy behind it.
