I wanted to do the same thing on my lrs, then get a truck lite but unless I can find a lower profile bucket I'll probably just stick with the 5 3/4. I just don't like the way they stick out so far.
To do a Fat Boy headlight on a Dyna and have it look right, you need this mounting block, Harley P/N "69611-06 Bullet Headlight Mounting System", about $50.00. I used a factory Fat Boy bucket with a euro spec Hella H4 lamp.
I have the drag specialties 7" light on my Fatbob. The light with the stock mount does stick out quite a bit and is to low imho. I welded a 3/8" coupling nut to the top of the stock mount as far back as it would go. Trimmed it to fit. This raises the light and sets it back about an inch both ways.
Here are a few pics. Kinda crappy and the garage is a mess...sorry
This is my 09 FXD with a 7"stock from a 2004 Fatboy (ebay purchase),, I use a Diamond Cut Adjure Lens with a stock bulb and I gotta tell ya,, I don't care if folks think it's too big or doesn't work with the bike. The HUGE difference in the night time lighting over the Dyna 5 3/4 is well worth any negative comment I've gotten from the forum.
It's been like this for 2yrs and NOBODY locally has come up and said it looks goofy,, in fact I've been approached several times asking how and what I did to make the improvement.
It's just personal opinion man, we're all entitled to our own. Doesn't make it right or wrong. If you like it, that's all that should matter to you. Don't let what others think bug you.
