Question Screamin' Eagle gear set doesn't shift into 6th

Hallo everybody,
I'm into trouble with my new 6-speed gear set and hope that there is somebody who could help me solving this problem.

I just installed a new 6-speed Screamin’ Eagle gear set HD 33102-03A in my 2004 Road King Classic. The instructions says under “j”: Install fork shaft set screw (HD3784) in transmission side door.” This was clear to me, but under “k”: “Install new side door plug (HD45830) into side door”. The problem is that I simply couldn’t locate the place for this screw in the side door. There is only the thread for the fork shaft set screw, the three oil boreholes and nothing else. I also checked with “ronnies part finder” without success. Therefore I assumed that this particular set screw 45830-48 would not be required for my specific modell and I finished the installation.
During my test ride I realized that the gears from 1 to 5 shift very well, however I could not shift into 6th. It was like shifting into neutral position, so I had to shift back into 5th. I then checked the clearance for the shifter rod and found out that the front shifter lever nut touched the cylinder a little bit. I cleared that and went on another test ride with the same result: Gears 1 to 5 work fine, shifting from 5 to 6 is like going into neutral. Everything else works fine, smooth shifting, easy to find neutral, no noises, etc.

Any ideas to solve this problem are more than welcome.

Pull the top cover off , get the rear wheel in the air and spin it while shifting through the gears. When shifting into 6th see what is impeding it from going into gear.

Thanks a lot for your quick response Mark. I did what you recommended. The problem is that I can't see exactly of what is preventing the shiftring dogs locking into 6th. I just see that the dogs are not engaging and that there is still little way to go for the shifter drum and shifter fork. I was also thinking about that the 6th gear had been installed in the wrong position with the grooves for the shiftring dogs facing the wrong direction. I also took the shifter rod aside and switched the lever by hand with the same result.
Is there anything left what I could do ?

It's not going to work if the dogs are facing the wrong direction. Anyway you can take a picture and post it? Also with the Screamin eagle gearset you have to modify the case. Did the modification go okay?

Looks like the dogs on 6th gear are set on slightly different diameters. Install the dog ring backwards (11) and the bigger diameter gear dog may not fit into the main drive gear..

Mark, Max, thank you so much for your ideas. I guess I got it: The shiftring dogs for 5th and 6th gear were indeed facing the wrong direction. Good lesson for me!!
I should have checked the assembly before final installment. Will install back everything tomorrow and let you guys know about what the result will be.
Cheers,
Heiko

Talking 6th gear operates now very well

After having installed everything back to normal I truly can say that the gear set works fine now. It makes perfectly sense to check the gear set properly before installation. If I had done this I would have saved a lot of work and time. Well, I call it experience. Hope there won't be any oil leakage.
Again, thanks so much for support :-)
