Anyone have any experience with a fender mounted sissy bar? I'm mostly concerned on their strength. I'm not looking for a tall one, just a useful one.
It's for my Lowrider S. The tail lights are mounted where the standard hardware goes for a sissy bar on the other Dynas. I want to keep the tail lights where they are and with the housing they have, it looks sweet.
I also want it detachable, so one that's bolted in between the fender and frame rails isn't ideal. However taking a seat on and off and a few screws is detachable in my book, not as quick and Harleys but it's a world of a difference from dropping the fender.
Thus a Fender mounted one. I'll be making it (professional blacksmith), so any improvements to the design are welcome.
I don't have access to my CAD tools anymore, but if the side plates were positioned so the weight was sotting on top of the fender struts, strength would be a non-issue. Perhaps shape them so the front edges have "hooks" that wrap halfway under the upper shock mount bolts and a single wingnut on a center spreader that holds down both the seat and sissy. One tool-less fastener and done.
Have you seen the great bike gear signal/plate relocation kit? Only asking cause I was the same way but needed to be able to have bags for trips, and found this kit. It's quite popular and I love the look of it cause it keeps the signals the same.
Sorry for the shitty pic, I got rear ended last week so I won't be taking any new ones until I fix it.
Heres a a couple better shots of the kit. I was so happy when I found this kit cause it let me keep the signals exactly how I wanted. Still miss the side mount plate but what can you do.
I think the relocation kit would work well for a lot of people, but me, being difficult, wants to try to accomplish this without moving the tail lights at all.
cggorman I think you hit the nail on the head. I like that idea better than what I've seen.
