Stripped off a bit more of the shitty black paint that came on the motor, and trimmed some unnecessary casting off the oil fill port:

Got this back tonight...

Balanced to my pistons, new pinion shaft, and new Darkhorse "Competition" H-beam rods and crankpin/bearing.

Now I've got TONS of stuff to do this weekend, and every weekend til the bike's back under its own power.

Dude, do yourself a favor and get that $300 Harbor Freight lift table and the $50 wheel chock. Your back will thank you for it and it cuts down on time required to do a project. Best bike related money I've ever spent.

Good idea. If I were in a more permanent location I would definitely entertain one. I live about 5 min from a Harbor Freight. The problem is I do a project like this about once every 5 years, and I'm working out employment to move to Florida this summer and the less I have to carry across the country, the better.

Once I live somewhere I feel worth growing some roots I'll have one.

Not many pics tonight but progress. We got a short block:

Two things worth noting.

1. The pinion bearing retaining clip was a total bitch to install. It's not like a normal snap ring. It's thicker, and doesn't have any holes to use the tool I have so I really had to jimmy it on there using a really small screwdriver and a lot of pressure and cuss words.

2. Getting the right case half over the pinion bearing was also a bitch. I've never slid a brand new case half onto a rebuilt crankshaft with a new pinion bearing. I'm positive everything was sized up properly. 1.2499" pinion race on shaft, 1.7510" pinion race in case, blue bearing, right? Well, it went about half way down easily then it was a lot of tapping with wood on opposite sides really taking my time. Eventually I could get a case bolts threads to catch and that made it a lot smoother but still... Now that it's together it spins really smoothly, no tight spots, but I can see where the 500 mile break in will be religiously followed.

Maybe I'll have the motor done by the weekend. My wife's on a vacation in Waikiki so I got the house to myself, gotta keep myself busy.

I'm holding out for the rest of the engine to come together before casting opinion on looks. One things for sure, getting all that shitty black paint off has been a royal pain in the ***. If the paint were consistent I'd have left it alone but it was flaking off all over!

I will really try keeping oil spills and smearing to a minimum. It seems every project I do there's a **** load of oil on something from some tragedy I could have prevented but **** happened.
