Default Rocker housing fasteners... wtf?

When i tore down my motor for my 103 build, i was quite meticulous in bagging, boxing and labelling every part and fastener so as to make assembly easier.

Having put together my rear jug, head and rocker housing, i had the dreaded bolts left over situation.... 4 of them!

I have been scratching my head trying to work out where they came from. There are no empty threaded holes for them to go into. I even mocked up the front jug on the bench to see where I might've messed up, and guess what, 4 bolts left over!!

Now Im really confused, what the hell is going on!!

I bought a full set of motor fasteners from a scraped wide glide with the same year motor as mine, so I decided to do a comparison, and oddly the 4 bolts I had left over from my tear down don't appear in the other set of fasteners, but there are 8 extra rocker cover bolts (the Allen wrench type).

I can only deduce that for some reason of the 6 rocker housing bolts the Moco used 4 different ones in my motor.

The manual clearly shows all 6 as being the same type (similar to the rocker cover bolts). So now the question becomes do I pull the 4 allen head style bolts and put what I can only assume were the original Hex head bolts, or leave it as is the way its pictured in the manual??

What the manual shows...

What I installed..

What I believe I actually pulled out during tear down.

the top six go in the cover.

the lower group goes inside. lighter go on the primary side of the lower cover

the "extra" four darker ones hold the rocker arm assembly (thing with the rocker arms on it) down. slow down slower.

relax and keep going. you are just hypersensitive, you have what you are suppose to have left over if, i'm reading your post right. rocker arms are next, then the outter cover.

warm and fuzzy:

Hey Cvaria, thanks for the pic, confirmed my suspicions. The 4 I have left over are not for the rocker assembly, they're too short and I have the rocker assembly bolted in with its correct bolts.

The 4 in question are indeed the rocker housing (base plate) as per your pic. Was just weird that the book showed the bolts as the Allen head style, and that's what i got in the spare fasteners bag from the parted out wide glide, but not what was in my motor.

All clear now! moving on......

Damn, I can't imagine being that organized. When pulled the motor out of my bike and completely disassembled it last winter, I just set all the bolts in the general vicinity of the part they went with. I'm not sure how I managed to get everything thing in the right place, but I didn't have anything left over and nothing has fallen off yet.

Edit: now that I think about it, I did forget to reinstall the little exhaust bracket on the bottom of the engine case before I put the motor back in the bike. Would have taken a minute to install when the motor was on the bench, but was damn near impossible to install on the bike. I think I was only able to get 2 of the 3 bolts in.

I understand completely. I have a limited amount of intelligence but am smart enough to know it I do stuff like this so I can use what little mental horsepower I have on assembly
