My apologies. I did not realize they had reformulated the stuff. It did not used to work with ethanol.

Absolutely correct! We suggest running the bike for about 10 minutes or so to ensure the entire system is treated. Also, try to keep the tank about 95% full to limit the amount of condensation that can form.

To clarify for other posts, each STA-BIL® formula has been reformulated over the years to address ethanol related issues in addition to stabilizing the gas during storage. The difference comes from the concentration of those chemicals that help combat the damaging effects of ethanol.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

I can assure you STA-BIL® (and other fuel stabilizers) help extend the life of gasoline (ethanol blended or not). Almost every OEM makes their own version of a fuel stabilizer. Harley has their own version and that is a great product. We have tested it and know for a fact that it helps prevent some ethanol related issues in addition to helping keep the fuel fresh.

The difficult part about fuel additives is that you don't see the inside of the fuel system very often, if at all. Over time, a poorly maintained fuel system will certainly show signs of not being taken care of. That being excess rust & corrosion, gum & varnish formation, etc. The problems do not always happen overnight, but you will see the issues over time.

Being aware of common fuel related problems and how to help manage them can go a long way in terms of preventing issues down the road. Simply put, STA-BIL® (along with some other additives) are anything but "snake oil"

Have a great afternoon

I get the larger sized bottle, with the measure chamber on the side, and use it in the gas-can fuel for all the small engine filling needs throughout the year. I also use it for storage in all the bikes (5) and such.

Noticed a new thing on the label this time--there is a place to enter the date when you open the container, and it says that the contents are good to use for two years after first opened.

I've never has a bottle of Sta-bil go bad from sitting, but it's nice to know that it is good for at least two years on the shelf after opening. I suppose that the actual usefulness is considerably longer than that, because you might add it to some fuel at or near the two-year-after-opening date, and it should still work for that fuel.

All the best,

Shane
That is correct. We have a two year shelf life once the bottle has been opened. At the end of the two years, you can add the contents of that bottle to fresh gasoline and it will still keep that fuel fresh for up to 12 months.

Have a great afternoon

Hold on, I wasn't saying that Stabil is snake oil, merely suggesting that it's not needed for the length of our typical winter storage.

As far as showing signs of excess rust, corrosion, gum and varnish, I've stored vehicles over the winter for years, both with and without Stabil, and haven't noticed any difference when I tore the fuel systems down. Both were clean as a whistle.

If you were to talk about the various specific chemical components, and what exactly they do, maybe that would more compelling than what sounds like typical "marketing department" talk?

I used to put stabil in it, but now since I drywalled and insulated my garage and heated it, I don't put anything in it anymore. Get more opportunity to start it once a week.

Winter storage? Nope, not me. Because I can ride at least one day of every week, I just cover it up every night of the year, that's all.
