I'll be needing to get my slider tubes out of my sliders to be able to complete the chrome fork lower job. I read in the service manual the the seals can be removed by "the slide hammer technique". I'm assuming that this is simply trying to pull the two apart by rapidly pulling with one hand on each? Any real "technique", or just pull harder if they didn't come apart on the last pull?
Make sure you remove the brass bolt from the bottom of the fork before trying to pull them apart. You may have to use a hammer and chisel to make it start turning.
remove dampener bolt (impact driver is handy here), remove springs, drain oil, (assume you have wheel off).
remove retaining ring, dust cover etc, from slider.
leave tubes in triple clamps. (or clamp them in non-marring vise)
push slider up on tubes, bring down with enthusiasm until slider comes off.
viola !! seal is on tube, remove tube from triple clamp . remove old seal .

See my thread entitled "Stripped" for details of that part of the project. If it all went smoothly, it wouldn't really be a challenge.

Sounds simple enough. I can't wait to see how I can complicate it.

heh, the "trick is to leave the springs in UNTILL you have taken out the dampener bolt.
the spring tension keeps the dampener from turning with the bolt
good luck , Watkins salve is good for skinned knuckles.
