Softail Deluxe Buyers Guide
Everything with the banks went through, and the money will be wire transferred tomorrow morning. Looks like I'll be picking up the bike (Saturday, I hope). I've got almost a 400 miles trek one way, but for the price, it is definitely worth it. I can't wait to start tearing into this one. I think I should probably get my apes, cables, etc. on order immediately. One of the things I have been struggling with is powdercoat vs. chrome. I know I'll do at least a small mix of both, but have plans in store for this one for sure.
First things first. Apes, fishies, and air cleaner... Meaning I'll probably have to get a tuner of some kind. (My last bike was already tuned at stage one, so I never had to touch it). I'm not sure what this one might have. Looks like the factory intake, and a set of Vance & Hines slip ons. Probably no tuner on the bike. The family, unfortunately, knows very little about the motorcycle.
As far as how I came across it, I had been searching my local Craigslist for a long, long time. Basically since I sold the Night Train in March. I got a wild hair last week and decided to just start searching every major area in the U.S. because for the right price, I'll fly anywhere and ride it back. Low and behold, I found this bike on the Chicago Craigslist, an thought for sure it was a typo on the price... Turns out, the owner passed away and left it to his kids in the estate. The bike was trapped in probate for the last year, and to keep it from going to auction, the family has been paying payments on it for the last year. They had tried selling it for closer to book value, but nothing... So they finally lowered the price to $500 what is owed just to get it gone (none of them are into motorcycles nor do they want anything to do with them).. That's where I came along and swooped it up!
I'll be leaving about 4 AM to go get it. It is about a 6 hour drive for me.
Good luck on the big plans and have a fun time working on it.
It was NOT too good to be true. Got to Milwaukee, saw the bike.. And within an hour it was loaded in the trailer and on the road. I racked up 754.5 miles today (on four wheels), but cannot wait to start on the project! Here are some pictures to get you started.. Sorry for the crappy quality. I snapped one of a mountain/bluff that was pretty much the only thing I saw all day because of the dense fog. Stay tuned....
