If the engine light on the speedo does not come on when you turn on the ignition, then you are not getting any power to the ECM. Or your LED's are burned out. I just looked in my factory manual and they have step by step instructions on how to test your system. Get one of those and follow it step by step.
The advise you are getting is good, but your bike is considerably older and has way less electronics involved than the newer models. The easiest thing to do is to take the tank off, find the harnesses and get a manual.

Totally agree.

Did the Clymer manual "instruct" changing out those parts? - doesn't sound like a sound diagnostic approach.
Attached is the page from my HD manual to give you some idea of the ignition coil power layout, which may be similar to yours, but best you look at getting this diagram specific to your model.
This diagram will help when testing for power on the coils etc. using a test lamp or multimeter.
To Mister Ron and all the rest who tried to help. Stick with me here cause this ends well! Decided to throw in the towel this week and put that machine back together to take it in for service. In the process of wrapping up all the wires strewn all over the place, I came across a little "bare" spot on one of the coil wires. HMM. So I taped it up and kept working putting all the wires together and decide to turn the key on, and now the engine light comes on in the speedo, which did NOT come on before. It's getting better! So get the plugs back in and all the rest and she fires! Yup started right up. It was a tiny little "rubbed bare" wire. Must have been shorting out some place. Actually MANY of those wires are nicked and rubbed. So I'm now I'm taking my time sure to re-protect all the wires so some other wire doesn't fail me down the road.
And so thanks again to Mister Ron for your patience and sticking with this. Some day I'm sure someone will do you a big favor as well. It's a great day sir!
