I initially had the breather plumbed into a filter but found that the filter had to be kept clean otherwise the side was misted with oil from the filter. I now just vent to ground through a sink supply line (about 20" long). See pictures. I've not found any oily mist on the lower frame rails with this vent line. And ... the best part ... I think the bike runs better without that oily mist into the cylinders.

Blackfly what are those orange things in your frame ?

At first I thought venting oil under the bike would be a problem with traction in the rear wheel but unless you're shooting out globs of oil (which you never would with these setups) traction should be good to go.

I might look into one of these setups when I switch out my air cleaner.

Those are frame protector to avoid damage to the Softail shocks when I use a lift.

There are quite a few reasons-

1. Your engine runs best with a combination of gas and cool air, adding hot air and oil will reduce performance

2. Most of that hot air is exhaust gases, which are oxygen depleted. It is the oxygen in the air that burns and provides power. Less oxygen, less power.

3. The oil will gum up your carb/throttle body, and also build up carbon deposits on your pistons. This reduces engine longevity and also tune stability.

Here a a couple of pics illustrating-

If you use a good filter, it will absorb the oil, and not spray a mist or drip onto the ground.

On a typical bike it will absorb all oil for 3000-5000 miles. Whenever you are washing the bike, spray the filter with a cleaning agent (soap, S-100, or similar) let it sit for 5-10 minutes while washing the bike, then spray it off. It is now ready to absorb another 3000-5000 miles of oil "blow-by" or carry-over.

Also, here is a link that has some good info on how to reduce the majority of the oil coming out of the breathers, if you have a bike that is really puking a lot of oil-

A filter, without something like a "catch can" to drain into, will absorb oil mist for a little while. Once the filter becomes saturated, it will start to drip and blow oil droplets.
