2002 Harley softail..have a free flowing filter and free flowing exhaust doesn't have the stage 1 download..looking for facts about the download vs buying another tuner which would be better? No future plans of doing any.other motor work.
A tuner is a better choice than the HD download. With no future mods, a Dobeck DFO/TFI is a good option. Very simple to use and tune. All it does is add fuel. I used one and was very happy with it til I went big.
I bought a tuner (pc iii from fuelmoto with their custom tune) when I put on straight pipes and the bike started running poorly...coincidentally my throttle shaft broke and tps sensor went out at the same time which caused the poor running.
I've since taken the tuner off and the bike runs just as well and uses less fuel. I'm very familiar with tuning, been tuning my Vette for 8 years, and as QC stated all the tuner added was more fuel which caused the bike to use more fuel. Performance is unchanged and plugs look good.
My personal opinion is that a tune isn't necessary for a "stage 1" update.
