Default mapping

Hi, new to this site. Got a ? My battery went dead on my 02' night train, well not sure if it went dead all of a sudden or slowly drained, any way it won't take a charge and is garb. But it would die sometimes when I came to stop or more wlike when I had clutch pulled in and got to real low rpm's then it would die, sometimes spit a little backfire at higher r's. Does anyone here think it's maybe a mapping problem since my batt. went dead?

Mapping? Do you have a PCIII or a SERT or are you referring the the factory ECM mapping?

Either way your battery going dead should not affect the mapping on any of the said devices.

I'm kind of lost when it comes to the computer programming thing, I'm pretty sure it is the factory ECM. Also my speedo and odometer don't work the mileage shows up and the speedo light turns on, but neither one of them seem to be registering. The miles on speedo have been the same for a while and the needle on the speedo moves a little bit when the power is first turned on. I took off the speedo senser in the tranny and there was quite a bit of metal shavings stuck to it so I cleaned it off but now my battery won't charge so I'm dead in the water. I guess I shouldn't of acted like I know what the problem is cause I I don't but will sure appreciate your guys's advise. thanks.

If your speedo isn't working, you could have a vehicle speed sensor problem, which would cause an ecm problem as well. If the ecm doesn't sense a speed, it won't send the approprite signal to the injectors. No engine light on? any codes?

i need to do some research on this forum and find out about codes. I don,t think there is a engine light on. Where would it be? Let me go look to see if i see anything. I'm hoping cleaning the sensor will help.

It may be a voltage problem, especially if your battery doesn't seem to want to hold acharge. A bad battery can easilysuck up most of thealternators output and the bike will not have the correct voltage to the ECM.

Because virtually everything is controlled by or through the ECM a bad/low voltage conditionto it will cause it togenerate all kinds of wierd and strange things.

One quick testis to start the bike upwith the seat offand use avolt meter tosee what the voltage is at the battery. It should register around 14/14.5VDC. If its lowerdisconnect the battery and use some jumpers to hook the bikes electrical cables to the battery on your car and test it again. If its correct then you have a bad battery and a new one should fix the problem.

If I had to guess it sounds like you may have a bad or shorted cell in the battery now. That will cause exactly the same kind of problems your seeing. Bet its worse when your sitting at a light with the turn signals on.

If the battery isn't one of the sealed types make sure there is enough electrolitic fluid in the cells. A low level will also cause problems but you canadd some distilled water to bring them up to the proper levels.

Thanks guys, I too believed it was battery, just a little concerned because of all the weird things going on like Citoriplus suggested. I'll get a new one this week and try it out. Thanks for helping the nOObie, it's encouraging to me to hear your responses and concerns. Vetigo14, I see in your pics a reflection in your chrome, of a dog lying on a blanket. Is it a pit?Getti-up.
