Question: HD Quick Detach Windshield Instal
I had never had the windshield kit installed so it's brand new. I went to put this thing on and it was a real pain to put on. Do these things get easier to put on after a bit of time? It is mega tight sliding into those rubber/plastic bushings. I had to reef the one side in and then focus on the other side until both sides were in. I have the black windshield brackets as well... not sure if maybe that adds a little more width to the mounting brackets or what.
Any videos I've ever seen always shows these things sliding on and off like butter.
Yup!
It takes me a little persuading and finesse to get the winshield on and off. I like em tight! You won't get any rattling or vibrations.
From what you describe it seems like it is taking excessive force to install the windshield.
Is your freight train nacelle a harley brand nacelle?
Did you order the correct LRS shield for the nacelle?
Does the windshield come into contact with your nacelle?
My gut feeling is you have the wrong brackets and maybe the wrong shield for your application.
BTW Harley doesn't make a King sized QD windshield with black brackets that will fit with their freight train nacelle.
The correct king sized QD windshield part number for a FB lo with a freight train nacelle is either 58652-97A or 58653-97A.
Both of these windshileds have polished braces. This is also assuming you don't have aux lights installed.
Now having said all this HD windshield part # 57688-10 which does have the black brackets MAY fit OK as long as your LRS shield is cut out for your freight train nacelle without aux lights.

- Make sure the Quick-detach mounting bolts and grommets are torqued to spec - too tight and it will give the kinds of problems you're describing.
- When I swapped out my H-D screen for the LRS, I left all the frame bolts a little loose.
THEN I installed the windshield and frame onto the bike before tightening everything up, to make sure it all lined up properly. Otherwise, the frame could have become skewed, which would also make it feel like a tight fit...
..and just to cover all the bases, are you sure you bought the right windshield?
Most H-D quick detach's come in two flavors - one for use with auxiliary lights installed, and the other for use without.
The only difference between the two is the spacing between the upright frame rails (and mounting points) - about 1/2" each side...
Mine pops on and off with minimal effort, every time.

I matched up the PDF files for part numbers between 57688-10 (black framed kit) and 58652-97a (kit designated for Softails with the Freight Train Nacelle and no aux. lamps) and the only difference between them was the "headlamp-cutout" for the 2 windshields and an extra washer for each of the mounting points for the "non-nacelle" kit. Everything is correct as far as parts go... it just fits extremely tight. I would have liked to have test-fit the windshield with all the bolts a little loose but the damn windshield came with 2-sided tape already attached to the brackets.... making it impossible to dry-fit and move the brackets around.
