Need some advice on this one. I have a 2006 heritage classic with 24k miles on it now. Couple of weeks ago I can here a weezing noise from what i thought was the main drive belt, made it all the time regardless if clutch was pulled in or not. I check the drive belt tension and appeared to be very loose, belt must be rubbing on something and causing the weezing noise.
I adjust the belt and head out to test ride it. I get about 6miles from the house and hearing a clanking noise now from the primary. Sounds like someone with a small ball peen hammer hitting the rim every 10-15 feet. I get the bike home and the tension on the belt is tight, not crazy tight but still tighter than what is should be.
From what I read this could be a inner primary bearing failure.
Any input would be appreciated. As always big things break at the begging of riding season.
If you have eliminated the belt as the cause and sure that the noise is coming from the primary you'll need to remove the primary cover and perform an inspection.
First check; chain tension, chain, chain tensioner, and sprockets for wear. Then check the compensator nut and clutch hub nut for tightness. Note: the clutch hub nut is a left hand thread. The only other items within the primary that could possible be the cause of your noise are the clutch hub bearing or inner primary bearing.
Your description of "Weezing Noise" leads me to believe that it's a bearing.
