On the older EVO Softails the oil is checked with the bike upright and the stick pushed all the way in. Since Harleys have a dry sump system only a quart is enough to lube the engine the same as if it was full. It might run a little warmer though since the oil is circulating much faster than when it is full.

I know this is an old thread but I am having a brain fart at the moment and the manual does not state how. I know the older bikes have a push in dip stick/cap. I have a 2016 Breakout and it screws in. Do I screw it all the way in or set it on the top of the threads? I found the owners manual lacking in that info. If my engine is cold where should the oil be up to on the dipstick. Yes I know to check it warm/hot to prevent over filling the tank. I just wanted to know for future reference..

I've always checked them screwed or pushed all the way in.

And if you have the time, the following link provides all you need to know on checking your oil level. Probably more than you want to know. Enjoy!

Inserted fully, you want to get your distick wet.

Not sure what all that means, but were you aware that this is the Softail section?
