Checking your oil, Yep thats a good idea. However never check it anywhere but at home. If you do and its a little low you will drive like an old lady till you get home to top it off. If you don't know its low you'll be fine.
On jiffy stand or straight up depends on the year. Always check for your year.
1996 Softail Bike straight up applies to softails and Sportsters. All other bikes that year on jiffy stand.

Remove fill plug stick wipe it of Stick it back in tank pushed Completely in filler neck. Softail full is bottom of the plug.
On the Touring bikes, the dipstick has both measurements on the dipstick for upright or on the jiffy stand... there really isn't much of a distance between the too.
Different years/models have different procedures... until you get your owner's manual, check it on the jiffy stand, with the cap resting on top... That way you won't overfill it (can be bad) and at the worst you will be about 1/2 qt low... where most people run softails anyways...
