I would rather spend 5 times on the better quality, brighter, more visible light, .....that has the potential of making things safer on the road for me, ....and more than likely last a life time.
You might be rite. I just came across this photo and review. Yikes, pretty scary actually.
"Safety first, right? Safety above cost even, right? I purchased this particular light. I'm sure its going to be the same product across the board at this price point. I've just installed the more expensive Harley-Davidson part. Now, having bought both, thus probably paying more than any of you, I'll let you decide for yourself. The photos are taken in the same location at roughly the same time of day. Spend the money people. We need to be seen out there. And yes, technically, this is a quality product, it fit with minimal modifications (drilled hole for wiring harness to reach). In full disclosure, the same modification had to be made to the H-D part.

Good example.
The BAL-1 is brighter than that HD light, and even though I much prefer the HD tri-bar style, I'll stick with the BAL-1 for now.

looks good ! I have the cheap one too and haven't had any issues with it so far (about 3 weeks). What bars are those and how tall are they?
I think they're Kuryakyn but not entirely sure. See pic for height. I had them fitted as I wanted to re-create the look of a Nightrain, the bike I wanted but couldn't get. I thought the high ones would look cool, which they do IMHO, plus they're really nice to ride with.
I like the style/appearance of that one, but would like to know if it's as bright as the BAL-1 that I have on now, and if it has the rapid fire flash before steady on brake light.
