It can be done if there are no cable ties or factory cable clamps. I always remove the tanks. It makes it easier to route the cables as well as checking out everything under - new vent hose and equalizer hoses on older bikes. Also a good time to polish rocker boxes.
Working on my breakout. Replaced the bars with some carlinis and the throttle/idle cables are too short. I can get the tank far enough back to lift up and look under. but can't quite see where they route and connect. I won't have the new cables until next week. Just trying to avoid the likelihood of pulling the tank and having to toy with the crossover gas

Do it right - 5 gallon can pull the cross-over and drain the tanks. Put the new cables on insure no binding withthe routing and put the tank/tanks back on. Much better and easier to do it the right way, than what you may think is easier and cause a PROBLEM.
