1K service
The reason there was a gap between the 22 and 30, was because I went to an indy for the 22. At 27 I needed a tire and I told the Indy to also do the 30 early. When I picked it up, he had only done the tire. He and I had a failure to communicate. And my $20 seat thumbscrew fell off, after his 22k, so obviously he didn't tighten bolts properly.
Some dealers you can tell they were thorough. Your brakes are adjusted properly, etc.. Some do little more than change your fluids.
I now take my bike to Sauk Prairie. Don the service manager gives me detailed estimates by email, and I OK the jobs I want done. Over the winter, I had my 30k, base gasket leak repair, SE cam chain tensioner, new tires, rebuilt front calipers, new front engine mount, new grips, new front brake pads, new jiffy spring.
My bike runs like new, brakes are tight. Cost me $3,500, which is about $100 less than the estimate. I do my own oil changes at 2.5 to 3k, and small things like the Heim ends on shift linkage, myself. Otherwise I am glad to have it done by trained professionals. Failure is not an option.
On many threads on HDF, there are some guys who know their ****. And some guys whose work is ****.
If I had a buddy who knew what he was doing and would mentor me, I would buy a lift and have him help me. But I don't, so I will keep going to Sauk Prairie.
Keep it between the ditches
At our dealer its still only $265 for regular service. My 1K 8yrs ago was a little over $200 with Syn 3,
After 15k I started changing my own oils and have our local Indy do the rest, He charges around $65 to lube the cables, check the spokes, check the belt tension, lube the neck bearings and check the fall-a-way.
