BTW - speedo is off as a result, no big deal.

The poster said "to change the belt the swing arm needs to come off", not to change the front pulley. At the very least, the swing arm pivot bolt has to come out.

Default only 1 reason to remove pivot bolt

well I just finished doing the 30/70 swap and I didn't touch the swing arm pivot bolt as on the Softail there is no need to remove it, unless......
You plan on changing the belt, you'll need to remove swing arm pivot bolt far enough to change belt.
I removed the rear fender, brake caliper, the axle to drop the rear wheel, the rear wheel, the floor board, kickstand, the primary cover, clutch discs & plates and spring, the chain tensioner, the primary sprocket/chain/clutch basket as one unit, the oil tank to remove starter from inner primary, then the trans pulley.
again, time consuming not necessarily difficult.

Default ANother option

check out thr Rivera Primo 32 tooth compensator pulley. Looks like a good and much cheaper alternative.

When I wanted a gearing change on my Fat Boy, I opted for the tranny pulley swap. For me it was the most cost effective. I went the other way going from 32 to a 34. Sounds like you want to go from the 32 to a 30. For me it was 100% bolt on. I changed nothing else. Not the belt, nothing. To make it worthwhile, do two teeth. Any less may disappoint.

Thanks bikerlaw. Yea, this has been a confusing thread; no offense guys...grateful for the help. But that's what I'm looking for, the most cost effective (not looking for the "cheap" way out) method to lower the gear ratio. So going down in teeth on the tranny pulley is the same effect as up on the rear sprocket?? Seems like there's a lot going on with the tranny/primary and I don't have it figured out yet. More reading in store!

I should have said less expensive,Rivera makes quality parts. As for the front pulley change, you may need a a new shorter belt, and the aftermarket belts are far inferior to oem.

You can use this rule as a general guideline. 1 tooth on the front pulley will render about the same RPM results as two teeth on the rear wheel pulley. Loosing two teeth on the front, about the same as adding 4 to the rear. As far as needing a new belt. My front pulley resulted in about 1/2 inch total adjustment. Look down at your axle and how it's sitting in the swing arm. If you have even close to an inch of adjustment available, you should be fine. Remember, you don't have the adjust the axle the length of two teeth. Just a percentage of it.

Thanks bikerlaw, but that's not what I was looking for. I'm needing to learn about all sprocket options under the cover...seems you can change the front sprocket or primary gears or tranny gears...seems like all kinds of options. I've only ever changed a front or rear.

Can I reserect this thread. Looking for the same info as the Op. basically trying to figure out what is the best route to change gearing. But....I dont even know what the options are.

From what I have read we have:
1. Game Changer
2. 30t front pulley
3. 70t rear

But in the ops last post he says you can change the frontpulley or the primary gears, or the tranny.

Where does the game changer sit? Does that replace a primary gear?

Any and all explanation of the different sets of gears would be fantastic.
Thanks guys!
