Default What is a "Stage One Tune?"

Guys, I've only been into Harleys for about 18 months, so I am new to all this. As some of you may know, I just bought a 2015 Fatboy.

I keep reading about folks getting a "Stage One Tune" which is said to improve engine performance. Could someone please explain this to me in very basic terms? Who does a Stage One Tune? What is it? Does it void the warranty? Is it good for the longevity of the engine or are you sacrificing longevity for performance?

I live in California and I am speculating that the Stage One Tune probably undoes a lot of the silly environmental crap that we have to put up with here.

Anyway, I would sure appreciate someone explaining all this in very basic simple terms.

The only true stage one tune is when you change the mufflers (or full exhaust system), air cleaner kit and dyno jet (if a carb model) or an ignition download (fuel injected model).
This gives you the extra power and unique Harley sound that you desire and your engine will run, as it should.

Basic..
Stage 1 = air cleaner, exhaust, and fuel adjustment
Stage 2 = stage 1 + cams
Stage 3 = stage 2 + heads
Stage 4 = stage 3 + anything extra you can throw at it

The purpose of a Stage I upgrade is to get more power out of the engine by helping it run more efficiently. This will also extend the life of the engine, when done correctly.

Stage I upgrades are NOT created equal.

Here's a LINK where you can read more in depth on what is involved in a Stage I upgrade.

Here's a dyno chart that shows the power improvement from a good Stage I upgrade on a Softail.
