I have not found any way to clean marks off black pipes yet. Please post if Welding glove does the trick or if you find a better method. So far I have left the marks because they look better than the pipes all scratched up.
I have chrome pipes too. I use Awesome cleaner and a Magic Eraser or similar from Walmart and it should not hurt the paint. I think I would shy away from oven cleaner after seeing what it does to aluminum.
The OP has black pipes. He can't use ANYTHING abrasive, like steel wool. It will remove the black finish. I'd be a little afraid of any aggressive scraping or rubbing as well.
I've used straight denatured alcohol on a cold pipe. Wet the rubber mark, let it sit, and wet it again. Use a soft cloth and keep wetting and gently rubbing. It will take a few minutes, but it's the most gentle way I've found.
The black coating is pretty tough, but it won't take aggressive rubbing. Even if the coating doesn't come off, you'll leave a spot that's a little smoother/shinier than it was originally.
i am looking into just doing heat wrap to cover it up. i've always liked the look anyway. my only problem with that is if i need to remove the exhaust or retighten it, then i cannot get the heat shields off which block access to the nuts on the heads.
