Default timing cover noise

Intermittent medium not loud rubbing ,light metal on metal sound behind timing cover. When sound is there so is missing, backfiring poping, Then sound goes away runs fine but will return. afraid to take off cam cover dont want to remove rocker boxes unless I have to. Years of sportster experience, first time inside a big twin .1995 80 inch Softail Any help would be appreciated

That's an Evo, you'll get good advice in the Evo forum, but it sounds to me that either your ignition is loose or your cam bearing is going out which they live about 50,000 miles.

Either way you need to take the cone cover off at least and see what is going on. If you are not comfortable wrenching, I'd post up a thread in the Evo section and ask for advice on a good Indy mechanic in your city.

Just take the cap off to check out the ignition...with luck maybe it came loose.

I think you can get the cone off without touching the pushrods. You can on a twin cam I did it and I think you can on an evo but I haven't personally done it.

This video is overkill but has great info.
