If you want to cover the exposed shifter shaft, Harley makes shifter shaft covers:

1. HD part 35471-05

2. HD part 35495-06

Exactly what I did just this past weekend. I was looking at swapping out the boards for forward controls but, after seeing that was a very pricey option for the Lo I just ditched the heel shifter. With the exception of scraping the boards on every damn turn, they are way more comfortable than pegs.
