Every since I can remember I've absolutely
loved the sound of a carbureted Harley.
Well I could not believe my ears when I first
stated up my FLSTC. At idle it has that old
school sound. After 181 miles it still has it.
I sure got lucky this time around. Vance & Hines
Straight Shot Slip On Mufflers and zero changes
to the intake did it for me. Others have mentioned
what a great sound it has so I'm not just dreaming.
My 2002 Softail Standard has an S&S Super E carb, some V&H Staggered straight shots and S&S 510 cams. It may not sound like a Shovel or Evo but it has a nice put, put almost stalling kind of idle sound that get's plenty of compliments.
I have both an Evo and the FI Breakout. No comparison. Ain't gonna happen. Best I could get with the Breakout, messing around, was set the idle AFR ratio at 11, set idle to 900rpm, 18 degrees advance. she'll have a nice lope idling that rich, but it's not something you want to leave that way. Bike still sounds mean as f*** though so no complaints.
I'll believe it when see (and hear) a video recording. I have my idle set down to 700, and it sort of transitions back and forth between "potato-potato" and a more even "don-don-don-don." I believe this due to some kind of computerized compensation...
You can change your FI bike to a carbed bike (there's even a tutorial floating around about how to do it), but you're looking at $700-$800 in parts.
OK guys, my quote... At idle it has that old school sound. caused a stir do to the fact every one knows you can not have that exact sound with my bike as is. My mistake in not saying Sounds Kind of Like. Still the best sound I've ever had with a FI bike.
