Default Fxst speedo issue

First off,

Long time reader first time post. a ton of great information here, I used the search and could not find anything with my problem, or just looked over it.

I have a 04 softail FXST, absolutely love the bike, bought it pretty stock so I can make it my own,

I have screamin eagle pipes, intake, just got my Primary and Cam cover powder coated black, next up is some Bars,

but until then I have a speedo issue and not sure were to begin, hoping some of you guys have heard of this.

it is not all the time but it is defiantly getting worse in the past 3 years, very intermittent, been slowly getting worse since I bought the bike.

while riding at a random time my speedo will dive to 0, backing light flickers, odo flickers with the backing light, while this is going on my turn signals wont work. I don't know if my fuel light goes off or not.

this happens very fast does not stay off for very long, spikes back up and drops again, then will be fine for some miles and just randomly start again, odo still counts. some times it does not happen on a 20 mile ride to work, but does it almost non stop on the 20 miles home>>>?

I have noticed that (I think) when its down if I hit my front brake lever it will come right back up. and it has never happened while slowing for a turn. has happened at idle. happens on smooth and really rough bumpy mountain roads.

too me it looks like a grounding short somewhere that my brake light completes the circuit, and resets the speedo,

don't have a buddy with the same year/make to swap some "known good parts"

sorry for the wall of text just wanted to get as much info to ya as I can,

thanks for the help

Tighten your battery connections. Also might be the ignition switch goin south on you. Check those two things first and report back

I'd clean that ignition switch, clean the battery connections, and check the ground cable. I've had dirty connections with similar symptoms.

Do you have the correct fuses in the box?

Just thoughts. Let us know what happens.
