i don't even bother with it anymore. when i was breaking her in i monitored gear, rpm, and speed but now that i have over 2k miles i don't anymore. now i just monitor range to empty or the time. speaking of range.. i'm seeing 210-215 on a full tank of 93. not too bad.
Rather than use a mechanical method of determining what gear the transmissions in, Harley decided it was cheaper to use a "Best Guess" electrical method using the ECU and various inputs to, as I said, "guess" what gear the bike is in. That's why it gets confused when the clutch is in - it thinks you're shifting. That's also why if you change the gear ratios of the primary by too much it blows it's mind. I changed my primary from 1.35:1 to 1.55:1, and HD doesn't have a clue how to correct the gear readout.
Thanks this answered my problem
I've done the 30/70 pulley change to my 14 fsxb breakout and used a Dakota digital sim-1A to recab the speedo and the gear indicator doesn't work.
6th gear light ok according to tech tho I've not tried 6th yet.
