I feel pretty much the same as you do. A friend of mine and I started planning right after the 2010 rally so we would be ready to go for our first time in 2011. We both had been around long enough to know that prices would be sky high but we both wanted to go so we could say that we'd been there and done that. We also stayed in Deadwood and our trip from Oregon was little over 3000 mile round trip. Interesting thing was, that we had actually over planned and we ended up coming back with some money left over. I guess that maybe we were a couple of the lucky ones because we had a great time. Sturgis definitely isn't for everybody but I am glad that we went.

Hotel rates in all cities raise dramatically based on demand (events going on during certain weekends). Here in Park City right now you can get a hotel room for $250 a night that will run you $1500 during ski season.

And $6 for a beer is a bargain compared to any sports arena. Those places are usually at least $10.

Personally, never been, but I plan to ride the Black Hills in the future (just prob not during the rally)

I went once for the experience of riding my bike there.

I'll never go back.

Maybe for a trip the week before or after the rally just for the riding in nice weather.

Wow, it's come to this, comparing price gougers and saying the lesser ******* is a "bargain."

Ya know, sturgis isn't for everyone. We all have different likes/dislikes and perspectives. And as someone else mentioned, sturgis is what you make of it. I've gone the last four years and plan to continue going. If you don't like it, don't go. You can ride those hills sometime other than rally week.

Don't go, it's too crowded any way.

I recall swinging by the Danny Gray tent in rapid city and was able to test out a seat I was looking for and was offered 15% off. I hit the 75th last year as my first because it was the 75th and it was my first opportunity to go. I will go back because I have people down toward hot springs and the riding throughout the region is phenomenal. I'm sure as a whole its a rip off and if you limit yourself to only staying/going to the most popular joints, you will probably blow a lot of unnecessary loot. But tbh, 6 bucks on a beer (if its good beer) isn't outside the realm on my end.
agree go to any major league ball park and you may be paying $10 a beer. $6 bucks a little high for a Bud or something but not an event like that. you gotta pay to play, its really simple.
