Default First time Synthec switchover

Ok Guys,

Despite my research on this site, I still need help. I bought my Mobil 1 V-twin Synth oil. I want to get all the old oil out. How do I do this without spending 60 to 124 dollars. Is it ok to run the synth with the oldpetrolium basedoil that will be left?

Im thinking of spending a15 bucks and getting some regular mobil 1, running that for a few miles,10 or so to mix up the two, drain again and thenput in the new stuff.

any ideas? Mike

The amount of oil that stays in when draining the oil tank is not enough to worry about it. IMO...

Thanks, but it seems that doing an oil change the regular method yields you 2.5 qts of oil. This leaves what is in the filter plus what is still in the engine. Just less than a full quart. I am not certian one should be running regular MOCO oil in with Synthetic.

This is what I did (on my 04 Fatboy), I drained the oil from the tank, replaced the oil filter with a new one, filled theoil tank with new oil, pulled the outside oil line from the tank (there are two lines on the tank. Pull the one closest to the oil fill hole. You will need a special plastic tool for this). Connect a drain hose to the end of the oil line you pulled and make sure it is secure. Put the other end of the hose into the container to catch the oil. Run the bike and watch the oil coming out of the drain hose. Once you see that new oil is coming out which may take 10-30 seconds, turn off the engine. Pull the drain hose off, reinstall the oil line, fill the oil tank to proper level, and your done. All the old oil was removed. This is very similar to the rougechoppers scavanger kit. Good luck.

To answer your specific question, running the regular moco dino oil with the synthetic oil is fine. Also, by the time you change the filter there will be a minimal amount of old oil left. Once again, the two mix with no problem.

thanks guys.... Ok here is what I did. I emptied the tank as normal. Filled the bike up with one qt of synth, held my handover the tank opening and started the bike for 3X10 second periods ensuringfresh oil wasstill in the tank. Icould see the oldoil mixing in new using a flashlight. Ire-drained the tank. Plenty of dirty oil left as I used the lower half of a milk jug for coloration. Bottom line, I waisted 2 qts of oil but I wanted just the synth in the bike. Like a dumb A&^ I ran my front fender into my sporster. Minor chip but still pissed myself off.

Anyway, seems to me the doing this for one go-round might work well for a normal change where the oil type was not changing but I feel at the end of the day, synth to synth change, that this is mostly unnessary. Just did not want dino oil in with the synth. THANKS for your thoughts.

Mike
