Default Rear wheel confusion

Maybe someone can help me. I'm planning on doing a 200 conversion over the winter and I'm trying to find an 18 x 5.5" spoke rim for a reasonable price. All over ebay I see these rims for 84-99 hubs, selling for about $200, none for years 2000 and up. the only ones I see for my year are over $800. I was wondering if I bought an 18 x 5.5" rim, and 18" spokes, could I lace them to my stock hub, or is that rediculous? I think this can be done alot cheaper (about $200 for just the rim and maybe $100 for the spokes). Anybody whoes upgraded their rear tire on 2000 and up, how much did you spend?

i would say that as long as the spoke count is the same you should be fine, check out some spoke calculators to get the right size spokes, and you may need a pulleyand brake spacer for the extra width.

How hard is it to wire up your own wheels? I have the softail service manual where it explains it, it doesn't sound so bad, but does any one have any experience with it?

Also, where can I find an inexpensive 18 x 5.5 inch wire wheel for with 2000 and up hub? Only inexpensive ones are for older style hubs.
