Default bearing seals toss em?

Hey Guys

While doing some research on the bearing installation I found some warnings about the seal hitting the bearings once everything got adjusted. Looking at the pics of the 3rd party replacement bearings it appears a seal is included with the bearing and race.

HD manual calls for this.
48300*60 ROLLER BEARING, W/ CUP
48361*80 DUST SHIELD, BEARING*UPPER
48365*48A DUST SHIELD, BEARING*LOWER

Whats the thoughts on the seals? Should I toss them and move on? Do I squeeze them between the roller bearing and the dust shield? Do the seals need an additional washer to back it way from the roller bearing?

Before anyone jumps in with don't replace them, they don't need it. The triple tree is covered in sand has some rust. It's going to get cleaned up and painted. Since the condition is questionable I feel it best I just replace things now while I'm there.

Thanks

You didn't tell us how old your bike was but since it's old enough to show rust and dirt, why don't you just replace the bearings and clean and reuse the seals?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Bike is a 2002 night train. My plan is to blast/paint rusted metal, replace bearings and dust covers. I'm just not sure if I should use the seals that come with the aftermarket kit.

I saw a video that described the seals impeding the function of the bearings. There it was recommended to add a washer to space the seal away so the bearing could move freely. To me the problem and fix makes sense. Where I have issue with the fix is the original assembly doesn't call for the seal or washer. Overall a .20 washer probably won't mean a thing but if I don't need the seal then why would the vendor throw it in?

Is the aftermarket kit multi-fit? Maybe the seals are for another application and not your Train? The fork rebuild kits are like that - lots of left overs.
